The Mercenaries Profiting From Sierra Leone's Civil War (2000)
Journeyman Pictures

Soldiers of Fortune (2000) - Mercenaries, allegedly working for the Sierra Leone government, have been charged with defeating RUF rebels - but blood diamonds might be their true goal.

Inside a helicopter mercenaries led by South African Neall Ellis fly fast and low over RUF rebel areas, shooting anything that moves. There is plenty of evidence suggesting that, while ostensibly working for the Sierra Leone government, they are in fact the military arm of the diamond mining companies.

The Will Of Death - Crime Investigation Australia | Top Documentaries | True Crime
ReelTruth. Crime - True Crime

Published on Oct 26, 2018
Sometime on the evening of October 19, 1990, the flamboyantly gay Sydney socialite Ludwig Gertsch was strangled with an elastic strap in the bedroom of his lover, Mr Vincent Esposito. His body was found, wrapped in a doona, in Blue Mountains scrub on November 11, 1990. In September 1994 a Sydney Coroner found that Ludwig Gertsch was strangled "by a person or persons unknown". But that's where the murder trail ends - his killer has never been brought to justice. The murder of Allen Hall at Warnervale, where he lived with Christine Hicks, the estranged wife of boxing mentor and horse trainer Cec Waters, presented a curious public with a cruel and twisted story. Water’s eldest son, Dean, eventually was charged with Hall’s murder. However, it would be revealed later that Dean had succumbed to his father’s demands. Cec Waters was depicted as a bullying, obsessive father, who was determined to make his three sons become boxing champions but slaves to his evil will.

"This film is in Vietnamese and highlights the defeat of the French at Dien Bien Phu [March-May 1954] by the North Vietnamese."

Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu (French: Bataille de Diên Biên Phu pronounced [bataj də djɛn bjɛn fy]; Vietnamese: Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ, IPA: [ɗîəˀn ɓīən fû]) was the climactic confrontation of the First Indochina War between the French Union's French Far East Expeditionary Corps and Viet Minh communist-nationalist revolutionaries. It was, from the French view before the event, a set piece battle to draw out the Vietnamese and destroy them with superior firepower. The battle occurred between March and May 1954 and culminated in a comprehensive French defeat that influenced negotiations underway at Geneva among several nations over the future of Indochina.

As a result of blunders in French decision-making, the French began an operation to insert, then support, the soldiers at Điện Biên Phủ, deep in the hills of northwestern Vietnam. Its purpose was to cut off Viet Minh supply lines into the neighboring Kingdom of Laos, a French ally, and tactically draw the Viet Minh into a major confrontation in order to cripple them. The plan was to resupply the French position by air, and was based on the belief that the Viet Minh had no anti-aircraft capability. The Viet Minh, however, under General Võ Nguyên Giáp, surrounded and besieged the French. The Viet Minh brought in vast amounts of heavy artillery (including antiaircraft guns). They moved these weapons through difficult terrain up the rear slopes of the mountains surrounding the French positions, dug tunnels through the mountain, and placed the artillery pieces overlooking the French encampment. This positioning of the artillery made it nearly impervious to French counter-battery fire.

The Viet Minh opened fire with a massive artillery bombardment in March. After several days the French artillery commander, Charles Piroth, unable to respond with any effective counterbattery fire, committed suicide. The Viet Minh occupied the highlands around Điện Biên Phủ and bombarded the French positions. Tenacious fighting on the ground ensued, reminiscent of the trench warfare of World War I. The French repeatedly repulsed Viet Minh assaults on their positions. Supplies and reinforcements were delivered by air, though as the key French positions were overrun, the French perimeter contracted and the air resupply on which the French had placed their hopes became impossible. As the Viet Minh antiaircraft fire took its toll, fewer and fewer of those supplies reached the French. The garrison was overrun in May after a two-month siege, and most of the French forces surrendered. A few of them escaped to Laos. The French government in Paris then resigned, and the new Prime Minister, the left-of-centre Pierre Mendès France, supported French withdrawal from Indochina.

The war ended shortly after the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and the signing of the 1954 Geneva Accords. France agreed to withdraw its forces from all its colonies in French Indochina, while stipulating that Vietnam would be temporarily divided at the 17th parallel, with control of the north given to the Viet Minh as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh, and the south becoming the State of Vietnam, nominally under Emperor Bảo Đại, preventing Ho Chi Minh from gaining control of the entire country. The refusal of Ngô Đình Diệm (the US-supported president of the first Republic of Vietnam [RVN]) to allow elections in 1956, as had been stipulated by the Geneva Conference, eventually led to the Vietnam War...

In the streets of Sangin, it is business as usual for the opium wholesalers and brokers. "We buy it from the farmers here and then we take it to the Iranian border," comments one local dealer. At $800 a kilo, opium is too lucrative to ignore and the traders are relieved the Americans show no intention of closing down their operations. Infamous drug baron Haji Bashir Noorzai is free to continue his reign.

Yemen and the global arms trade | DW Documentary (Arms documentary)
DW Documentary

Published on Dec 4, 2018
Weapons manufactured in the West and exported to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have ended up in the hands of Yemeni militia.

This is directly in contravention of international law and arms trade treaties. A documentary by the independent journalist network Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) reveals the shocking details. Egyptian journalist Mohamed Aboelgheit spent a year tracing and documenting the origin of weapons that have ended up in the hands of armed groups fighting in Yemen’s civil war. The countries of origin include Germany, the US, the UK, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Serbia, Bulgaria and others. Yet according to international treaties, these arms should never have reached Yemeni militia groups. Aboelgheit created social media accounts using false Yemeni names to get access to the informal trading networks and groups. In some cases the sellers were at pains to emphasize that the weapons were brand new and had never been fired. The documentary airs weighty evidence to show that Gulf states have been passing arms sold to their military on to other parties in Yemen - for political reasons. This is clearly in breach of "end user” certification laws intended to ensure that exported arms are not passed on to third parties.

INDUSTRY ON PARADE BUILDING MINE SWEEPERS MODERN MOVING BY ALLIED VAN LINES FISH FARMING 64484
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Dec 16, 2018
One of a series of films made by the National Associaton of Manufacturers to promote American business, this film consists of various segments. First segment shows the manufacture of mine sweeper ships for the U.S. Navy at the Bellingham Washington Shipyards. Many parts of the ship are created by hand, while other parts are constructed with modern techniques. Resorcinol glue, also known as resorcinol-formaldahyde, is used to make structure members. This is an adhesive combination of resin and hardener that withstands long-term water immersion and has high resistance to ultraviolet light. The adhesive, introduced in 1943, has been popular in aircraft and boat construction.

At 3:20, a patriotic segment "A Message from Industry to You" focuses on freedom, including economic freedom that makes America great.

At 4:00 is a segment about an easy and innovative way to move via Allied Van Lines, which uses large cardboard boxes to pack possessions and move them on a large truck.

At 8:20 the use of magnets in industry is shown, including to sort defects from enamel paint. Magnets are used in power plants, to sort iron elements from coal in an electrical plant, etc.

At 11:20, a goldfish farm is profiled in Kentucky.

U.S. ARMY TREATMENT OF NORTH VIETNAMESE & VIET CONG ENEMY PRISONERS OF WAR 54294
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Dec 16, 2018
This 1973 U.S. Army color film MF20-5841 describes itself as providing a historical documentary of the internment, release, and repatriation of enemy prisoners of war, as per the Geneva Convention. January 1973. A bird’s eye view is given of South Vietnam (1:08-1:35). Soldiers capture North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, blindfold, transport, and identify them (1:36-2:45). The prisoners were moved to a brigade collecting point for screening. Shown is the 4th Infantry Division Collecting Point. An overhead view shows the detainee tents and POWs arriving via helicopter (2:46-3:40). POWs sit under guard behind barbed wire fence. They are separated by signs: Detainee, Innocent Civilian, Officer, Female (3:41-3:57). Forms are filled out in an military office (3:58-4:29). Red Cross officials visit detainees (4:30-5:02). The central POW camp was on Phu Quoc, as seen from a guardhouse 5:03-5:15). Military police advise officers. The ARVN Military Police (Quan Canh) entrance is shown (5:16-6:10). There are large gardens. Water is drawn up from a well and carried between prisoners working the fields. Vocations were taught (6:11-7:48). A gong is sounded to gather into predefined groups. “Hard core” POWs were segregated from the rest (7:49-8:50). Many used the camp to learn skills such as manufacturing artificial legs, spray painting, wood construction, cabinetry, and sewing on Tung Yuen treadle machines (8:51-10:12). Doctors treat wounded POWs, and acupuncture was approved for use (10:13-11:19). Women and children wearing Asian conical rice hats sit outside the barbed wire fence, and leave parcels and mail for prisoners (11:25-12:15). Traditional Vietnamese holidays were celebrated, as shown by a dragon dance. Buddhist and Christian church services were provided (12:16-13:05). The camera pans the camp from a distance (13:06-13:58). The Paris agreement of January 1973 requires all prisoners to be released within 60 days. U.S. Air Force C-130s arrive to transport them. Some Viet Cong soldiers elected to be released into South Vietnamese society via truck transport (13:59-15:00). Complete personnel records were sent with each POW (15:01-15:39). On the day of release, some Viet Cong refused to move. Saigon sent members of the Joint Military Commission to speak with them. This delay held up the release of 27 American POWs and is resolved. The wounded receive ambulance rides or a military truck ride to the air field (15:40-18:55). The women are loaded into the transport plane (18:56-20:21). The able-bodied men ride in military trucks, shown leaving Khu Giam 3, and taken to the runway (20:22-21:30). The ICSS observed the aircraft loading process (21:31-22:40). Views inside the cockpit are shown (22:45-23:24). After landing, the people are moved by truck transport past wrecked villages. They strip their clothes off in defiance at the exchange site and board motorboats in their boxers to Duan Khan Thang Loi Tro Ve, where the North Vietnamese provide a new uniform. The ritual was repeated at other sites (23:25-27:14). POWs who changed their minds caused violence and turmoil between the military forces (27:15-32:24). The last group hold signs refusing to be returned and are transported for release in South Vietnam (32:25-34:30).

"How our fighting equipment gets through to our fighting men in quantity and on time. The mountains of supplies for combat loaded at ports of embarkation are unloaded under combat conditions and under fire in the South Pacific. From behind-the-lines General Supply Depots they are moved through jungle swamps to advance bases, to the firing lines. The never-ending battle of supply is graphically told in these pictures."

United States War Department Film No. WF-12

Originally a public domain film from the US Army, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quarter...)

The United States Army Quartermaster Corps is a Sustainment, formerly combat service support (CSS), branch of the United States Army. It is also one of three U.S. Army logistics branches, the others being the Transportation Corps and the Ordnance Corps.

The U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps mission is to support the development, production, acquisition, and sustainment of general supply, Mortuary Affairs, subsistences, petroleum and water, material and distribution management during peace and war to provide combat power to the U.S. Army. The officer in charge of the branch for doctrine, training, and professional development purposes is the Quartermaster General. The current Quartermaster General is Brigadier General Ronald Kirklin...

History

The Quartermaster Corps is the U.S. Army's oldest logistics branch, established 16 June 1775. On that date, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution providing for "one Quartermaster General of the grand army and a deputy, under him, for the separate army". From 1775 to 1912, this organization was known as the Quartermaster Department. In 1912, Congress consolidated the former Subsistence, Pay, and Quartermaster Departments to create the Quartermaster Corps. Quartermaster units and soldiers have served in every U.S. military operation from the Revolutionary War to current operations in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom)...

Functions

The function of the Quartermaster Corps is to provide the following support to the Army:

- general supply (except for ammunition and medical supplies)
- Mortuary Affairs (formerly graves registration)
- subsistence (food service)
- petroleum and water
- field services
- aerial delivery (parachute packing, air item maintenance, heavy and light equipment parachute drop, rigging and sling loading)
- shower, laundry, fabric/light textile repair material and distribution management

The very first time I recorded anything on a VCR. WHYY-TV 12 Wilmington - Philadelphia. VHS tape in late May 1985. Transferred to DVD in 2005. It seems to have held up beautifully. And it is the best quality copy of this program available on YouTube.

Did the Germans really create a stay-behind guerrilla force known as 'Werewolf' to continue the fight behind Allied lines in 1945? Yes, they did, but here you will discover the true story of an organisation that remains shrouded in myth and lies.

U.S. NAVY 1941-1942 " WAR ON THE SEAS " WORLD WAR II PEARL HARBOR to NORTH AFRICA 70414
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Mar 29, 2019
Presented by the U.S. Navy and produced by The March Of Time, War On The Seas (MN-1532) is a short Navy film from 1943 that tells viewers the story of the Navy from its recovery of Pearl Harbor up through the invasion of North Africa at the end of 1942. The film opens with Japanese footage of its pilots climbing into planes and taking off from an air craft carrier on 7 December 1941. Japanese bombers fly through the sky toward Pearl Harbor. Japanese forces drop bombs on U.S. Navy targets at Pearl Harbor. Footage shows Japanese strikes on U.S. ships and grounded planes; the U.S. ships are on fire and sinking in the harbor. The film then shows viewers the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the damage to the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, including destroyed planes and hangers reduced to rubble. Navy salvage divers begin work in Pearl Harbor (03:14). In Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo and his war cabinet pose for a photo (04:03). Adolf Hitler and his generals meet and review plans for war at a mountain location (05:19). The film shows some of the ships and submarines that make up Germany’s naval force (06:42). The U.S. Navy sets up defensive positions and sea mines along the Atlantic coast (07:20). Men load up Naval patrol bombers (07:55); a bomber—what appears to be a PBY-5 Catalina—rolls into the water from a ship and then takes off. The PBY-5 patrols the skies looking for German U-boats. German officers in a U-boat prepare to dive the ship (09:15); the Navy’s PBY-5 bombs a U-boat. The film shows footage of cargo ship convoys on the Atlantic. A German U-boat surfaces (10:44) and prepares to fire a torpedo at a cargo ship in the dark of night. The cargo ship is hit and is engulfed in flames. U.S. Navy forces fire on a German U-boat. Nazi Luftwaffe long-range bombers take off from German bases along the coast of Norway (13:00). German dive bombers attack Allied war ships (13:32), which fire anti-aircraft guns at the Nazi planes. British naval forces maneuver in the Mediterranean Sea (14:47). British ships fire on Nazi aircraft. A German plane is hit and crashes into the sea (15:48). Admiral Chester Nimitz meets with officers to plan naval operations in the Pacific (16:30). A U.S. carrier striker force sails to engage Japanese forces near the Marshall Islands (17:32). American planes take off from the carriers while other ships fire heavy guns on Japanese targets. U.S. ships unload bombers (19:00) at a harbor in a New Zealand or Australian port. Next, the film shows viewers footage from the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Members of the Navy run out onto a carrier’s runway (20:22); Navy pilots meet in ready rooms to review the mission. Pilots man their Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless dive bombers on the deck of the carrier. They fire up their engines and taxi into takeoff position. The planes take off and fly in formation on their way to the Japanese fleet. Navy ships fire anti-aircraft guns at approaching Japanese planes (22:50), most likely Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters and Aichi D3A dive bombers. A U.S. carrier is hit. Japanese planes take fire from U.S. guns and some crash into the ocean. A Navy squadron (25:12) begins bombing Japanese carriers. A Navy submarine is supplied before setting out in the Pacific (26:24). A Navy crew prepares to dive their submarine (27:48). The submarine fires a torpedo and hits a Japanese ship. A U.S. convoy of transport ships and warcraft sails from San Diego to the Solomon Islands carrying troops of the 1st Marine Division (28:45). Marines swarm the beaches of Guadalcanal in August 1942 (29:29). Marines march down a jungle road (29:56). Elsewhere, U.S. forces fire heavy artillery guns. Footage shows a naval battle at night in November 1942, with the firing of guns illuminating the dark night. U.S. forces invade North Africa during November 1942 (31:35). Navy ships fire guns on Axis warships. U.S. jeeps and supplies are unloaded from ships (32:20). A Navy ship is christened and put out at sea (33:30). The film shows more shots of newly built Navy combat ships leaving the docks, then concludes with footage of Navy ships at sea.

Kon-Tiki 1950 film - ORIGINAL VERSION
PhilaVideo

Published on Mar 29, 2019
Kon-Tiki" was the name of a wooden raft used by six Norwegian-Swedish scientists, led by Thor Heyerdahl, to make a 101-day journey from South America to the Polynesian Islands. The purpose of the expedition was to prove Heyerdal's theory that the Polynesian Islands were populated from the east---specifically Peru---rather than from the west (Asia)as had been the theory for hundreds of years. Heyerdahl made a study of the winds and tides in the Pacific, and by simulating conditions as closely as possible to those he theorized the Peruvians encountered, set out on the voyage. The whole film is black and white, shot on a single 16mm camera. It won the 1951 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. I saw that there is another version of this film on YouTube. It is not the original film. The narration was redone and the images were reworked. Frankly, I find that it bears little resemblance to this the original version that I recorded off WHYY-TV in 1990.
