" KNOW YOUR ENEMY THE VIET CONG " U.S. ARMY VIETNAM WAR TRAINING FILM w/ ENEMY NEWSREELS 12884
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Apr 2, 2019
In this 1968 Armed Forces information film (AFIF 172), viewers see several Viet Cong/COSVN propaganda films (captured by American forces near the Cambodian border) that show military operations, logistics and demolition planning, and non-military activities of the Viet Cong from their point of view. The film begins with a shot of the motion picture trademark of COSVN or the Central Office for South Vietnam, the communist organization and command headquarters that is directing the communist war effort against the Republic of Vietnam. An American man watches teh films on a Moviola and speaks to the camera about the value of the captured COSVN propaganda films. The title of the first film is translated to “Military Operation by the 9th Viet Cong Main Force Division in retaliation for the bombings of Hanoi and Haiphong” (01:51). A division political officer speaks to his division prior to an assault (02:00). Officers and soldiers where cards and posters pledging vengeance for the bombings of the northern cities. The political officer passes out ropes to be used on captured prisoners. A bugler sounds the attack, and the soldiers run through the jungle to attack an American armored personnel carrier. Footage shows the dead American soldiers; the survivors are taken prisoner and marched through the jungle barefoot. The next film begins with a Viet Cong attack against Allied forces in South Vietnam (03:38). Communist soldiers march down a road; women and children carry supplies for the Viet Cong. U.S. helicopters fly overhead—most likely UH-1 Iroquois (04:03). Men carry machine guns and prepare to attack a South Vietnamese outpost. South Vietnamese and American troops walk into the ambush (04:45), and the Viet Cong open fire. Footage shows the dead soldiers as the Viet Cong strip the corpses of their weapons. At camp, Viet Cong clean the captured weapons and ammo and ready them for the next assault (05:38). A Viet Cong commander plots an attack against a South Vietnam hamlet (06:06). The Viet Cong soldiers jog through the jungle with branches on their backs for camouflage. They march past an overturned Caltex tanker truck (06:40). South Vietnamese prisoners are marched off for interrogation. Communist supporters in the hamlet welcome the Viet Cong with dancing and singing in honor of the “liberators.” Next, viewers see the demolition operations of the Viet Cong. Men wade through a body of water carrying food and equipment above their heads; in this case, the men carry bags of rice (08:31). Armed women help make up the Viet Cong’s transportation force and pass along supplies (09:00). Men and women walk reinforced bicycles loaded with supplies. A demolition expert dissembles an unexploded bomb. Viet Cong fashion boobytraps for the jungle (10:10). Viet Cong forces and members of a local community walk on a railroad (10:34), where they destroy a railroad track that leads to a derailed government train. Footage shows where explosives have created small gaps in railroad tracks. An officer uses a small model bridge to brief a guerilla unit on a demolition mission (11:41). Men squat in the jungle and prepare explosive charges. The Viet Cong climb the bridge to plant the explosives at preplanned locations. The explosives are detonated and the bridge is destroyed. The final propaganda film shown is of non-combat work of COSVN officials (13:33). Banners and signs welcome Chinese journalists to the COSVN camp. Viet Cong and Chinese officials toast each other and exchange photographs of Ho Chi Minh and Mao Tse-tung (Mao Zedong). A North Vietnamese entertainment troupe performs for the Chinese writers (14:12). The Chinese correspondents visit a Viet Cong printing plant, which publishes the Vietcong Liberation newspaper and other propaganda leaflets. A man demonstrates the printing press. Next, viewers see Viet Cong carry wounded soldiers to the main COSVN hospital (15:20), which is an underground hospital. Nguyen Chi Thanh, 4-star general, visits the hospital (16:19); he meets with some of the wounded men there. The film concludes with footage from the COSVN meeting to plan the winter-spring offensive of 1967, which features the COSVN’s political chief as the main speaker (17:06).

Central Office for South Vietnam was the American term for the North Vietnamese political and military headquarters inside South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Some doubted its existence but in his memoirs the American commander in South Vietnam, General William Westmoreland, spoke of it as something whose existence and importance were not in doubt.

"THEY CAME TO AN ISLAND" U.S. NAVY CIVIL ENGINEER CORPS WWII SEABEES CONSTRUCTION BATTALIONS 29564
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Apr 14, 2019
They Came To An Island (MN-5834) is a 1946 U.S. Navy film that gives viewers a look at just some of what the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps accomplished in the Pacific during World War II. The film opens with a shot of the Navy Department Bureau of Yards and Docks, which is headquarters to the Civil Engineer Corps. In the unit’s archives are rows and rows of file cabinets containing the files of the men who served during the war. Navy men drill in full dress (01:28). Men climb aboard a ship with their gear; cargo is loaded onto the ship by cranes. Heavy machinery and tanks are also loaded onto the ship. The men kill time sitting out on the deck of the ship (02:38), some box, and others paint. A church service is held on the deck of the ship. Aerial footage shows the sea and the ships from planes. This is followed by explosions on an island and shots of Grumman F6F Hellcats and Vought F4U Corsairs. A pontoon causeway is dropped into the water. Seabees build a dock out of the pontoon bridges (05:43). Trucks drive off the ship and onto the makeshift dock as they head to the island. A tractor plows grass and clears underbrush. Men chainsaw down palm trees; another tractor knocks over a tree. A large tractor pulls equipment (08:00); earth is leveled and graded. Men cut logs, which are then trucked away. A blast destroys rock and a backhoe clears out the rubble to make way for an airstrip. More graters and bulldozers level the terrain. Rollers flatten the earth. 10:44 Men lay down steel Marston Mats and link them together for the air strip (10:44). Men move lumber in makeshift lumber yard on the island (11:14). The Seabees raise walls for buildings, then they put on trusses. What appears to be a Vought F4U Corsair takes off from the newly made runway (12:09). The Navy engineers set up a fuel pump. Men service a B-24 Liberator (12:51); the Liberator then takes off. There are some good shots of the island base being developed. Then the men are back at sea on their way to Iwo Jima. Men gather on deck for a briefing. The troops tend to cargo and clean their weapons (14:36). A ship in their convoy takes a direct hit off in the distance (14:58). The troops see Iwo Jima, and then the Marines move in. Seabees cling to cargo nets as they are moved from one ship to the next for landing (15:40). The Seabees head to shore in a LCVP to wait for incoming cargo. Large artillery guns are moved off the ship; trucks and other equipment are moved onto LSTs. An LST loaded with equipment heads to the beach near Mount Suribachi (18:38). Footage shows tanks, trucks, and artillery guns moving off the LSTs and onto the sand. Men form a bucket brigade line and pass along boxes and barrels of supplies. A truck gets stuck in the sand (21:07) and a bulldozer needs to tow it out. Men roll out the Marston Mats to make a better surface to drive equipment and supplies off of the LSTs. Seabees set up water hoses to distill water (23:00). The Seabees follow the Marines as they push the Japanese back on the island (23:50). A bulldozer moves earth at a new site (24:38). A lookout stands on the bulldozer blade searching for land mines. The film then shows the men living on the island, shaving, bathing, and cooking. A large shovel chips away at Mount Suribachi (26:27) and loads lava rock onto trucks. Tractors pull graters to build an airstrip, and then heavy steam rollers compact the earth. Some Seabees build a cemetery on Iwo Jima and put up grave markers. Other men walk around the cemetery looking at the graves of their brothers (28:45). There are fresh water wells, and the men shower with the new fresh water. Men build an underground medical center using leftover strips of Marston Mats (31:05); they add a weather-strip cover and then surround the building with sandbags. A bulldozer moves sand over the sandbags to camouflage the medical center. The Seabees are then back on the ships heading for Okinawa. Floating pontoons are dropped onto the water (34:24). Trucks leave the ships, driving to the island over the causeway. Trucks move through thick mud; a bulldozer pushes mud out of the way to make a more serviceable road. An aerial view of the island shows the ocean “pier” and the roads and airstrip built by the Seabees. (37:53). This is followed by a shot of “harbor” at Okinawa built by the Seabees (38:50).

In World War II, the greatest threat to the British navy is the German battleship Tirpitz. Being anchored in a Norwegian fjord, it is impossible to attack it with any chance of success. But the navy trains a special commando to attack it, using little submarines to plant underwater explosives under it.

OPERATION STEEL PIKE 1964 AMPHIBIOUS LANDING EXERCISE SPAIN / ASSAULT AT HUELVA 50304
PeriscopeFilm

Published on May 1, 2019
This film, "Assault at Huelva" profiles Operation Steel Pike, the largest peacetime amphibious landing exercise in history, conducted by the United States Navy and Marine Corps and taking place on the coast of Spain in October to November 1964.

The operation involved 84 naval ships and 28,000 Marines of the 2nd Marine Division, and was commanded by Vice Admiral John S. McCain, Jr.. In the opening hour of the landing, two helicopters collided in mid-air, resulting in the deaths of nine Marines and causing injuries to 13 others. Another Marine was crushed to death by a tank while asleep in his sleeping bag. During the trip over the ships were divided into three convoys sailing under war time conditions with ASW escorts. There were many civilian ships contracted to the Navy to transport military personnel and cargo to the landing area. Once the ships were anchored in place the landings began. There were two or three days of landing men and equipment ashore, then one day of rest for the landing craft. After that, the task force started back loading men and equipment onto the ships. When it was finished, the ships departed for liberty to different ports.

The Ch-34 helicopter is seen in many parts of the film. The Sikorsky H-34 (company designation S-58) is a piston-engined military helicopter originally designed by American aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky as an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft for the United States Navy.

H-34s served, mostly as medium transports, on every continent with the armed forces of twenty-five countries. It saw combat in Algeria, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and throughout Southeast Asia; other uses included saving flood victims, recovering astronauts, fighting fires, and carrying presidents. It was one of the last piston-powered helicopter designs before its replacement by turbine-powered types such as the UH-1 Huey and CH-46 Sea Knight. A total of 2,108 H-34s were manufactured between 1953 and 1970.

YESTERDAYS NEWSREEL 20TH CENTURY AMELIA EARHART ENGLAND COLOGNE CATHEDRAL NEW YORK CITY 62424b
PeriscopeFilm

Published on May 1, 2019
This Yesterday’s Newsreel film (episode 139) offers the viewer “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This newsreel opens with footage of Amelia Earhart. Earhart is escorted from her plane Friendship with pilot Wilmer Stultz after arriving in South Hampton, England. The famed aviator is greeted by South Hampton Mayor Mrs. Lucia Foster Welch. Earhart is cheered on by supporters upon her arrival in New York City and is escorted by ticker-tape parade guru Grover Whalen. Acting Mayor Joseph McKee welcomes Earhart. The film then shows footage of Earhart flying an autogiro (02:05)—she is the first woman to fly one. She lands the aircraft and smiles for the camera. Earhart is celebrated in 1932 with a New York ticker tape parade; she is shown standing with Mayor Jimmy Walker. The segment on Earhart wraps up with footage of her preparing to land in Oakland, CA after the lengthy flight from Weber Field, Hawaii. The next segment shows German Hans Swoboda displaying his model of the Cologne Cathedral in New York City in 1930; the model is made entirely out of match sticks. In the following segment, viewers watch as soldiers test a new machine gun (04:36) and throw grenades. New tank prototypes move across a field. A biplane is equipped with a gun for aerial combat (05:07). In the “Personalities” segment, viewers watch John Philip Souza lead the High School of Commerce Band in Boston. He conducts band for several other school bands. Miss Nita Naldi poses with a puppy (06:17), and Isadora Duncan’s brother Raymond walks around a U.S. city wearing a toga. The next segment shows footage of a fire at a New York pier. Pier 69 is covered in flames (07:05) as firefighters fight the blaze with fire hoses and chopping a vent hole in the roof of a nearby building. In “Mud for Medicine,” viewers see people in Calistoga, CA taking a mud bath. The next segment shows the Europa, of the North German Lloyd line (NDL), sailing the Atlantic in March 1930, setting an ocean-crossing record. Skipper Nicholas Johnson watches over the ship. “Homes Put To Torch” shows the planned demolition of English war homes via controlled fire. The “Fashions of the Day” segment looks at a women’s home economics class at the University of Maryland where women sew patterns, iron clothes, and apply makeup. The episode concludes with the 1926 Armistice Day race in Charlotte, NC (11:30): the film features shots of several drivers, including the winner of the 100-mile dash, Leon Duray.

SAGA OF THE TRITON 1961 OPERATION SANDBLAST CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE GLOBE UNDERWATER 22044

This episode of Expedition! was originally broadcast February 14, 1961. The episode covered Operation Sandblast: the underwater circumnavigation of the globe by the US Navy first-generation nuclear-powered submarine USS Triton, starting February 24, 1960 and ending April 25, 1960. The trip covered 26,723 nautical miles (49,491 km) in 60 days and 21 hours, crossing the equator on four different occasions.

Operation Sandblast was the code name for the first submerged circumnavigation of the world, executed by the United States Navy nuclear-powered radar picket submarine USS Triton (SSRN-586) in 1960 under the command of Captain Edward L. Beach. The New York Times described Triton's submerged circumnavigation of the Earth as "a triumph of human prowess and engineering skill, a feat which the United States Navy can rank as one of its bright victories in man's ultimate conquest of the seas."

The circumnavigation took place between 24 February and 25 April 1960, covering 26,723 nautical miles (49,491 km; 30,752 mi) over 60 days and 21 hours. The route began and ended at the St. Peter and Paul Rocks in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean near the Equator. During the voyage, Triton crossed the Equator four times while maintaining an average speed of 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph). Triton's overall navigational track during Operation Sandblast generally followed that of the first circumnavigation of the world, led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan from 1519 to 1522.

The initial impetus for Operation Sandblast was to increase American technological and scientific prestige before the May 1960 Paris Summit between U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. It also provided a high-profile public demonstration of the capability of U.S. Navy nuclear-powered submarines to carry out long-range submerged operations independent of external support and undetected by hostile forces, presaging the initial deployment of the U.S. Navy's Polaris ballistic missile submarines later in 1960. Finally, Operation Sandblast gathered extensive oceanographic, hydrographic, gravimetric, geophysical, and psychological data during Triton's circumnavigation.

Although official celebrations for Operation Sandblast were cancelled following the diplomatic furor arising from the shooting down of a CIA U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union in early May 1960, Triton did receive the Presidential Unit Citation with a special clasp in the form of a golden replica of the globe in recognition of the successful completion of its mission, and Captain Beach received the Legion of Merit for his role as Triton's commanding officer. In 1961, Beach received the Magellanic Premium, the United States' oldest and most prestigious scientific award, from the American Philosophical Society in "recognition of his navigation of the U.S. submarine Triton around the globe."

The Battle of Midway 1942: Told from the Japanese Perspective (1/2)
Montemayor

Published on Apr 27, 2019
(Animated Battle Map)

This is part one of a planned two-part video covering Operation MI. As you can see I spent a considerable amount of time covering Nagumo’s Dilemma. To me it's one of most striking examples of how tough it can be for a commander to make a decision based on the information at hand. I found that to be the most interesting aspect of the battle.

I don’t have a Patreon but if you want to show appreciation for my work feel free to donate.

Corrections:

"Strength" and "Auxiliary" are misspelled in the video.

At 22:55 I should have stated “North of Midway” instead of Northeast of Midway. The illustration shows a 10 degree 240 nm from midway location. Not so Northeast as I audibly stated.

At 23:43 I should have stated 79 aircraft instead of 78 and I should have displayed 35 instead of 34 torpedo bombers. the “mistake” came about because sources still differ on whether there were 27 or 26 Carrier attack planes (Kates). If it was 27 it would have been 79 Planes. if it was 26 it would have been 78. During the recording I somehow mixed up the numbers.

Additional Notes:
notice that the carriers started off the battle in a box formation. This provided further mutual support for their rather weak AA fire. however, due to the incessant air attacks from VT-8, VT-6 and VT-3, the carriers were never able to reform in a box formation, instead they were in a ragged line which further worsened their AA capabilities.

-----------------------------------------Spoiler Below regarding Nagumo's Dilemma---------------------------------------------

So what was the answer to Nagumo’s Dilemma?

“Taking all together, and admittedly operating with the benefit of hindsight, the “right” answer to Nagumo’s conundrum probably should have emphasized maneuver, offensive speed in preference to mass, and passive damage control. With fifteen minutes in which to act, he didn’t really have time to implement anything terribly fancy. But he could have helped himself immensely by immediately spotting every strike airplane in his hangars, whether they were armed or not, and launching them at the Americans. The sixty-four armed aircraft he had in had were perfectly capable of doing enormous damage to his enemy. And by emptying his hangars, he removed the single greatest danger to his carriers --- the presence of fueled and armed aircraft within them.”

"COMMUNIST ACCENT ON YOUTH" 1961 CRISIS FOR AMERICANS ANTI-COMMUNIST DOCUMENTARY COLD WAR 48564
PeriscopeFilm

Published on May 2, 2019
Created in 1961 by Pepperdine College, "Crisis for Americans: Communist Accent on Youth" was one of a four-part, Hollywood-produced film series. This episode describes the philosophies of socialist communism and how they contrast with those of a free republic. All the films in the series utilized newsreel footage and scripted narration, and each film sought to expose the threat of Soviet-based communism to capitalism and free societies around the globe. In turn, the films describe how communism preys on susceptible youth (Communist Accent on Youth, 1961), spreads through violent aggression (Communist Imperialism, 1962), and cloaks itself behind the discourse of “peaceful coexistence” (Communism and Coexistence, 1963). The fourth film, The Questions and the Answers (1965), argues for the necessity of congressional investigations that root out communist activities within the United States. Straddling the period of the Cuban Missile Crisis, these films offer an excellent example of the anti-communist discourse typical of this critical moment in Cold War history. William J. Teague, Vice President of Pepperdine College, spearheaded the Crisis for Americans film series, and appeared in three of the four films. Doyle T. Swain, Pepperdine’s director of business relations, was, like Teague, a staunch opponent of communism, and served as consultant on the films. Through the films, Pepperdine officials hoped to emphasize the important role of education in combating communist ideology and propaganda. The film series was the most far-reaching of Pepperdine’s greater efforts to fight communism, which included a weekly Speaker’s Bureau, the annual California Freedom Forum, and citizen education and teacher training programs. Pepperdine sold and distributed hundreds of copies of the films, which also appeared as television broadcasts across the nation. Although the original plan called for at least a dozen titles, Pepperdine officials felt satisfied with the series after the fourth film in 1965, and terminated the series due to growing concerns over costs.

-I do not own this film-

A documentary film by Nick Downie and Lord Richard Cecil. Lord Richard Cecil, dressed in the attire of the Rhodesian Security Forces and armed with a FAL, was shot and killed during the production of this documentary by a nationalist guerilla.

I discovered this documentary while reading Alexandre Binda's book "Masodja" about the Rhodesian African Rifles while writing a research paper. I haven't seen it anywhere else.

"THE LIFE AND DEATH OF USS HORNET" CV-8 YORKTOWN CLASS AIRCRAFT CARRIER @ BATTLE OF MIDWAY 81704
PeriscopeFilm

Published on May 6, 2019
The Life and Death of the U.S.S. Hornet is a short Navy film that gives viewers a brief history of the famous CV-8 Yorktown-class aircraft carrier. The film opens with a shot of the nation’s Capitol Building, followed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt making a statement in the Oval Office about the B-25 bombing mission from “Shangri-La,” the code name for the USS Hornet. At a shipyard, men and women build the carrier (01:37). The USS Hornet is launched on 14 December 1940 (02:16). Supplies are loaded onto the Hornet. Men and women inventory the ship’s cargo. On 21 October 1941, men of the Hornet stand at attention as their commander speaks to them (04:00). The ship leaves the docks and is out at sea for training. Douglas SBD Dauntlesses take off from the Hornet (04:57). A Grumman F4F Wildcat has a rough landing on the carrier and nearly careens off into the ocean. Lt. Col. James Doolittle’s North American B-25 Mitchell medium bombers sit on the deck of the ship (06:21). Bombs are loaded onto the B-25s and the aircraft are readied for takeoff (06:50). Doolittle watches as the bombers take off for the raid on Tokyo. Men of Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8) pose for photographs before their fateful mission during the Battle of Midway (08:20); footage shows a number of the crew and the lone survivor, George Gay. The men take off in Douglas TBD Devastators. A memorial service is held on the Hornet for the fallen men of Torpedo 8. Pilots sit in a briefing room (11:10), then they take off in their planes during the Battle of Santa Cruz. Japanese bombers come into range and the Hornet’s gunners shoot down the enemy planes (12:00). Smoke billows from the ship as it is hit by torpedoes and Japanese kamikaze fighters. Men of the USS Hornet abandon ship for the safety of nearby Navy vessels (13:50). U.S. Navy ships fire on the Hornet to sink the damaged carrier (14:27). Wounded men are evacuated off the ships once back in the U.S. (15:15). A new carrier is launched, one of many new ships being built for the Navy, concluding the film.

USS Hornet (CV-8), the seventh ship to carry the name Hornet was a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. During World War II in the Pacific Theater, she launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo and participated in the Battle of Midway and the Buin-Faisi-Tonolai Raid. In the Solomon Islands campaign, she was involved in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands where she was irreparably damaged by enemy torpedo and dive bombers. Faced with an approaching Japanese surface force, Hornet was abandoned and later torpedoed and sunk by approaching Japanese destroyers. Hornet was in service for a year and six days and was the last US fleet carrier ever sunk by enemy fire. For these actions, she was awarded four service stars, a citation for the Doolittle Raid in 1942, and her Torpedo Squadron 8 received a Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism for the Battle of Midway.

U-Boats History - The Sinking of U 47, U 99 and U 100
UnknownHistory - BitmapAxis

Published on Aug 9, 2015
In 1941 times had changed for the German U-Boats. It was more difficult to find convoys and the ones, that were found, were given stronger escort. In the first 14 days of January, 1941, U-boats had managed to sink only two vessels in North Atlantic. This was due to the number of operational submarines as well as adverse weather conditions.

Three famous German U-boat commanders, Günther Prien, Joachim Schepke and Otto Kretschmer, decided to take leave with their crews. They were national heroes and everyone wanted to meet them. The most known and admired was Günther Prien, the Bull of Scapa Flow, who sank British battleship HMS Royal Oak. Otto Kretschmer was the most successful U-boat ace, who sank 46 ships and damaged another 5 during the World War II. The last one, Joachim Schepke was the 11th most successful German submarine commander during the World War II. In 1941 he was just 20 year old; he was elegant, handsome, very confident and approachable at the same time. Unlike Prien and Kretschmer, he was happily giving official speeches at the Nazi Party rallies, keenly supporting Hitler`s regime.

A few weeks later all of them were out of action. Krestchmer was taken prisoner of war, Prien and Schepke were dead. Three famous aces were eliminated within just a few days. Was that the beginning of the end for the Nazi Wolfpacks?

Twilight of the Yakuza: Japanese Yakuza (Yakuza Documentary) | Crime Documentary | True Crime
Reel Truth Crime - True Crime

Published on May 14, 2019
The Yakuza, Japan’s organised crime syndicates, are a dying breed. Their members are aging and the government of Japan has launched a large-scale crackdown on them to eradicate them once and for all. But who are the Yakuza? The cancer of a nation or a necessary evil in a country with one of the lowest crime rates in the industrialised world?

Undoubtedly the Yakuza are involved in crimes including extortion, fraud, murder, drugs & gambling. However, Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the industrialised world, with crimes related to drugs -officially against the Yakuza code of honour- or street gangs strikingly low, a fact that many contribute to the presence of the Yakuza. Deeply rooted in Japanese society, they are seen as a necessary evil and ‘problem solvers’. They have been around since the 1700s and were said to protect the weak from the strong, following a rigorous code of honour. Several clans even contributed aid for the victims of the recent earthquake and Tsunami, all reasons why the public perception of the Yakuza in Japan is not solely a negative one.

Unlike the Mafia, the Yakuza is a legal, public group making them relatively easy to check on. Their offices are public, their members registered by the police and Yakuza members went as far as freely admitting their guilt in cases of crime investigations, as a part of their code of honour. In reaction to strict government measures against them, the Yakuza has ceased all cooperation with the law. As the police concentrate their resources on the Yakuza, many criminals simply don’t register with clans anymore and start operating underground, evading the grasp of police. A clear trend is emerging towards a new structure of organised crime in Japan, resulting in a steep decrease in the numbers of the traditional Yakuza while the underground is soaring – including foreign Russian and Chinese mafia’s.

This documentary deals with the struggle of the Yakuza for its survival and the restructuring of the organized crime scene in Japan. Furthermore, unprecedented access to the secret world of the Yakuza gives you an insight on who the Yakuza really are: criminals, outcasts, but also family men and a part of Japanese society.

BOW HUNTER ART YOUNG in ALASKA 1922-1923 "ALASKA ADVENTURE" 47764
PeriscopeFilm

Published on Jun 12, 2019
The first bowhunting movie ever made, the silent documentary "Alaskan Adventure" showcases the skill of Art Young. Young was a gifted athlete who learned his archery skills from Will Compton. Compton also later introduced him to Dr. Saxton Pope and Ishi. Young used his exceptional abilities with the bow and arrow to quiet skeptics who doubted the efficiency of the archer's tools. According to Cassius Styles, Art Young was the best shot of the group, "He was one of the very few men I have seen who was really master of an 80 pound hunting bow. This was not because he was gifted with enormous strength; he commanded that bow because he was not too lazy to practice with simple persistence. He was a violinist with enough real talent to give finished recitals with the same hand that gripped his heavy shooting gear. His shooting was as artistic as a recital, and almost as thrilling." Among other species, Young harvested deer, moose, Dall's sheep, brown bear, grizzly bear and African lion. Young also wrote articles for Sports Afield. This film Alaskan Adventure was shot in 1922 and 1923. It was at that time that Young traveled to Alaska accompanied by cameraman Jack Robertson. Neither carried a firearm, relying solely upon Young's osage longbow for protection. Young took mountain sheep, mountain goat, moose and an Alaskan brown bear on Kodiak Island. The film was released around 1926.
