Trump and Macron’s “friendship tree” has died
A tree that President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron planted together as a symbol of friendship has died at a time when the relationship between the two leaders is withering, reported the Guardian.
The story: The oak tree sapling was a gift from Macron to Trump which he delivered during his state visit to the U.S. last year and came from the site of a World War I battle in France. At the time, Macron described the gesture as “a reminder … of these ties that bind us” and the “tenacity of the friendship” between France and the U.S. After they Trump and Macron planted the tree, along with first ladies Brigitte Macron and Melania Trump, it was quarantined as a safety measure.
Tensions between the two leaders arose due to their disagreements and different viewpoints on various issues, including climate change, trade, and nationalism. French daily newspaper Le Monde wrote that the death of the tree was “metaphor for a relationship that isn’t what it was."
