In an exclusive interview with People's Hour, Vasily Prozorov, lieutenant colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) - where he served from 1999 to the end of 2017 - spoke about what the government of Ukraine and the media subordinated to Washington are hiding. : the anti-democratic character of the Kiev regime, with political persecution, assassinations, war crimes and bombings of civilian targets, and the rise of neo-Nazi groups
As a Ukrainian secret service officer, he witnessed US interference in the 2014 coup d'état, the new government's help in the formation of neo-Nazi militias, and the persecution and murder of journalists and opposition politicians.
Currently, Vasily Prozorov runs the Ukraine Leaks website (ukr-leaks.com) where he releases secret documents from the Ukrainian government and the SBU that prove the crimes he denounces. People's Hour - What was your role within the SBU? As a member of Intelligence, what was your role in the Donbass conflicts?
Vasily Prozorov- Since 1999, I have been an employee of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). For a long time I worked in operational units, in particular in the anti-corruption and organized crime units. Since April 2014, I started working at the SBU's Anti-Terrorist Center, which directed the so-called Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) in Donbass. I worked there until the end of 2017.
Since April 2014, voluntarily, for ideological reasons, I began to cooperate with the Russian special services, as I wanted to fight at any cost against those who came to power in Kiev in February 2014.
At the headquarters of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the Security Council of Ukraine, I was a liaison officer with other police and state structures, which allowed me to receive information from various special services and departments in Ukraine. The information obtained in this way, I transmitted to Moscow.
HP – The events in Maidan Square, which ended in the 2014 coup d'état, had the support and public presence of Washington authorities, who also directed the composition of the coup government. Was there direct interference, with intelligence or military advice, and political action by the US and other NATO countries in the events of 2014?
VP – Yes. US officials, such as Victoria Nuland, repeatedly traveled to Kiev during the “Euromaidan” period to support opposition supporters. The representatives of the West did not hide this. In February 2014, it was Western countries that promised President Viktor Yanukovych a peaceful solution to the conflict and simply tricked him into giving the insurgents the opportunity to seize power in Kiev.

After that, Western countries regularly provided Kiev with all kinds of support – from purely military and financial to intelligence. Things got to the point where, in 2015, the SBU created a hotspot for American spy satellite photographs. This service was provided by the SBU to the US CIA.
And the training of Ukrainian military and intelligence officers by Western countries began in 2014 in various polygons [shooting, such as training camps] and training centers both on the territory of Ukraine and on its own territory.
HP- There are records of political persecution, such as the closing of parties, imprisonment and torture of journalists and leaders. How did these facts happen? Who practiced this kind of persecution? How important is this repression for Kiev policy?
VP- Immediately after the Maidan, Kiev's new power was well aware that pro-Russian sentiments are strong in the country. Therefore, from the beginning of their rule, they began to destroy their opponents. And often, literally. So, in 2015, the well-known writer and political scientist Oles Buzina was killed, and his killers were quickly found, but they belonged to nationalist movements and therefore were not punished. And there are many such facts.
For example, TV channels in Kiev were not only closed, but also fired at the buildings in which they were located. So, in July 2019, the office of the opposition TV channel “112” was hit by grenade launches. And in 2021, President Zelensky often ordered the interruption of broadcasting of most TV channels that somehow expressed an opinion different from the position of official power.
In post-Maidan Ukraine, all you had to do was label someone a “Kremlin agent” and they were on the radar of repression. In fact, this could be repression by official structures, the SBU itself, or simply attacks by nationalist structures.
The ultimate goal of such actions was to suppress any dissent and close the channels of alternative information, as well as the desire to sow fear in people's minds. Kiev authorities were well aware that all their activities since the Maidan were criminal and therefore it was necessary to quickly and efficiently intimidate the population, deprive them of the will to resist.
HP- What is the relationship between the 2014 coup and the war in Donbass? What was the source of the conflict? What are the reasons for the foundation of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics: separatism or resistance to the fascist coup?
VP- The connection is the most direct. The Maidan slogans were frankly Russophobic. Furthermore, Ukraine was never homogeneous – and the western part of the country was constantly opposed to the east and south, where the majority of residents were Russian people by nationality, culture and language.
Therefore, for the victorious Maidan, all supporters of Russia were enemies. The first decrees of the new government were aimed at severing all ties with Russia, limiting the Russian language, which, by the way, was spoken in 2014 by more than half of the country's population.
Well, after the population of the eastern and southern regions strongly spoke out against this policy, Kiev resolved to suppress resistance by more severe methods of force.
Thus, already in April 2014, demonstrations, pro-Russian acts in Kharkov were suppressed. And on May 2, a terrible tragedy happened in Odessa. At the time, militiamen from Kiev, brought especially to the city, burned alive dozens of people who sympathized with Russia.
Let me remind you that even though 8 years have passed, no one has been held accountable, although independent investigators have identified most of the perpetrators of this massacre. Of course, the inhabitants of eastern Ukraine did not want to be led by Kiev's power, its overtly nationalist and even fascist views. Therefore, from April to early May 2014, resistance developed on the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, at first peacefully, when ordinary people stopped the Kiev regime's tanks with their own empty hands, and then armed themselves.
HP- What was Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO)? Are there any records of war crimes carried out in the last eight years?
VP- The so-called ATO was announced on April 13, 2014 by the interim president of Ukraine, Oleksandr Turchynov. The official reason for this was the information that in Donetsk and Lugansk, regional centers in the east of the country, the local population had taken over the SBU buildings, administrative and police spaces.
However, I want to remind you that in January 2014, when the Maidan had not yet won in Kiev, a wave of occupations by regional administrations, SBU and Ministry of Internal Affairs departments and military units spread across western Ukraine. Weapons seized there went immediately to Kiev and were used by protesters against police forces. In addition, occupations of buildings in western Ukraine caused casualties among both government structures and protesters.
In Donetsk and Luhansk, everything went without victims, and even without any conflict.
However, Kiev needed a pretext to start, let's say clearly, a “punitive operation”. It was necessary to quickly and effectively suppress the mood of protest in the eastern regions. And so, from the beginning of the ATO, in violation of all the laws of Ukraine in force at the time, the new leadership in Kiev involved the Armed Forces in this operation.
And the use of the Army immediately brought the operation from the anti-terrorist category to the military category. Furthermore, at that time (May-early June 2014), Ukrainian security forces were fought by activist units assembled by local residents and armed exclusively with small arms. Kiev threw tanks, artillery and aircraft at them.
Already in May, Ukrainian security forces began intensively bombing places of housing and civilian infrastructure, and on June 2, the first air strike was carried out on the peaceful city of Lugansk. A Ukrainian SU-25 attack plane fired missiles at the regional administration building and the adjacent square, where there were no military installations. Dozens of civilians were killed and wounded in the attack.
Overall, over the 8 years of the ATO, hundreds, if not thousands, of war crimes committed by Ukrainian security forces against civilians have been officially documented, including bombing civilian cities with rocket systems, aircraft, artillery, blocking cities with disasters. humanitarian aid, torture, extrajudicial executions, illegal imprisonment and much more.
HP- What were the Minsk Accords and why were they not able to end the war? What internal forces prevented its application?
VP- After a series of important military defeats, the Kiev authorities, first in September 2014 and then in February 2015, signed the so-called Minsk agreements.
They called for a ceasefire and a series of political reforms, including granting broad autonomy to the People's Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. First of all, in terms of language choice, economic and political ties with Russia, the independence of its police and judiciary forces.
However, in reality, the Kiev regime simply used these agreements to breathe and prepare a new offensive. I have several documents at my disposal that indicate that Kiev did not intend to abide by these agreements. Although from time to time they staged readiness to implement the agreements reached. Kiev, however, used this time to prepare its security forces to unleash an information war and terrorist sabotage against the Donbass republics.
HP- The emergence of many “volunteer battalions” coincides with the 2014 coup. What is the relationship between these facts? How important is the coup for the growth of violent and neo-Nazi groups in Ukraine?
VP- The nationalists were the main attacking force of the coup in February 2014, when the legally elected president Viktor Yanukovych was overthrown. The first volunteer battalions were formed precisely by the Maidan militiamen, who during the winters of 2013-2014 confronted the forces of law and order. These militiamen from the beginning held openly Russophobic views, and some were adherents of nationalism and even Nazi movements.
Therefore, when Kiev announced the start of the so-called Counter-Terrorist Operation in the east of the country, where people of openly pro-Russian views lived, it threw a stream of nationalists into these “volunteer battalions”. In addition, many people with an openly criminal past have joined these units, making personal enrichment through robberies and looting their goals.

Naturally, when activists from these battalions began to be actively used in the ATO, their ideas began to actively penetrate the masses. And after they were integrated into various Ukrainian power structures, nationalist ideas began to spread among the military, police and special services. For example, if in May 2014 a tattoo with a swastika or the motto of an SS division would cause total rejection among ordinary military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, then, already in 2019, the presence of an insignia of the SS division “Totenkopf” on the vest of an elite airborne brigade did not cause protests or scandals.
HP- In your articles you say that these battalions have acted in different ways in the last eight years. Some acted more forcefully on the front of the war in Donbass, while others acted in repression in cities controlled by Kiev. Tell us more about the difference between the groups…
VP- Conventionally, such units can be divided into several groups. The first and most numerous are voluntary units under regional police departments. In 2014, under the auspices of the Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov, these units were created on a large scale. And some of these special divisions had no selections: they took people with a criminal record, with chronic illnesses, drug addicts, etc. The preference was given to the nationalists, fighters of the Maidan's “assault groups”.
In total, more than 30 such units were created in Ukraine, several in some regions.

These divisions, after the end of active military operations in Donbass in 2015, joined the ranks of the police in their regional centers as units of the patrol service of special importance. VP- Kiev authorities directly supervised these units. After all, they were all integrated into the country's power structures. VP- Among them there are defenders of openly Nazi views. Furthermore, some of these units, such as the “Azov” or the “Right Sector”, have become a sort of testing ground to receive military training or combat experience for individuals with Nazi views from all over the world. I did some research and established that there is a whole network of neo-Nazi organizations, a kind of Nazi International, whose supporters actively participated in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine within these divisions.
In many ways, it was these units that became the source of the spread of Nazi and Fascist views in Ukrainian society. And now, unfortunately, in Ukraine, which suffered greatly from fascism during World War II, it has become the norm to tattoo swastikas or walk around town with SS symbols.

Pro-Moscow forces have detained Igor Kolykhayev, the elected mayor of the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, Russian media reported on Tuesday.
“Ex-mayor Kolykhayev has been detained,” Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the Russian-backed Kherson administration, told state news agency RIA Novosti.
Kolykhayev, the elected Kherson mayor, was “kidnapped” by pro-Russian forces Tuesday morning, his counselor Galyna Lyashevska said on Facebook.
