Police are investigating the deaths of two people, who were divorced from each other, found with gunshot wounds to the head in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.
Kent James, 64, and Julia Dykina, 43, both were found dead Tuesday in a home they lived in together, League City Police Department spokesman Officer John Griffith said.
Dykina was a Ukrainian immigrant.
Police were called to the 4700 block of Eagle Cove Lane in the Magnolia Creek subdivision about 8 p.m. Tuesday after a child living in the home ran across the street to tell neighbors their father was injured, Griffith said.
Police arrived and found James on a bed in the main bedroom with a gunshot wound to his head, which police believe was self-inflicted, he said. Police found Dykina in a bathroom with a gunshot wound to the head.
Both James and Dykina were dead when police arrived, Griffith said.
Police found a pistol near James, he said.
The investigation is ongoing, but police believe James killed Dykina, then shot himself, Griffith said.
James and Dykina still were living together but were divorced, Griffith said.
Dykina, also called Julia James, was a Ukrainian immigrant who in February flew home to collect her children, 8 and 14, from her home country, where they were staying with their grandparents when the war broke out. That was Feb. 24, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
In early March, Dykina organized a protest on NASA Road 1 by Space Center Houston, donning her home country’s colors of blue and yellow. At the time, she said she’d wanted to help some friends get permission to stay in the United States and to encourage the West to establish a no-fly zone over Ukrainian air.
The Ukrainian American Cultural Club of Houston posted a statement Wednesday about Dykina’s death.
“Today, we lost an amazingly kind, talented, humble and patriotic member of our community,” the post states. “She was proud of her roots, passionate about space and was there for her homeland and her community always.”
Dykina had three children, the post states.
One child was at home during the incident but didn’t see anything, Griffith said. The other child arrived home later and found James on the bed, he said.
The children are now with family members, he said.
Police don’t know what led to the shooting, Griffith said.

Ukraine has always been Russian, ( parts Polish) till 1991….Interesting are the calls from the Russian populace ( and hawks) to retake Odessa as Katherine the Great founded the city in the early 1700’s….I of course would like to see Vlad take Odessa, as that may be the only way the war could cease. That would land lock the Ukies, effectively end them as a nation….maybe Vlad would be kind enough to charge them transit fees to export their goods….that said, it would not surprise me to see a Ukie war 1 and Ukie war 2 much like our Gulf War 1 and 2 if Vlad doesn’t play his cards right.

The Ukrainian attack on Novaya Kakhovka – a city in the Kherson region controlled by the Russian forces – with American weapons is a “crime against the civilian population”, Vladimir Leontyev, head of the city's military-civilian administration, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday night. According to him, there are victims, dozens of people were injured, hundreds were left homeless.
“Tonight reminds me of the terrible analogies of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which the United States carried out in August 1945. Almost the same thing happened to us today. There are already casualties among the civilian population, there are wounded, hundreds of people were left homeless, dozens of houses were destroyed. Hospitals continue to receive people. Many dozens of people are injured. We are shocked by this bombardment," he said.
Deputy head of the regional administration Kirill Stremousov told RIA Novosti that Ukrainian troops launched a missile attack on Novaya Kakhovka with high-precision American HIMARS rocket launchers.
A Russian ammunition depot exploded in the city, the speaker of the Odessa regional administration Sergey Bratchuk and adviser to the head of the Kherson region Sergey Khlan said.
“People’s windows are flying out, but they are still happy … Because this means that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are close,” Khlan said.
Sources of Russian TASS and RIA Novosti news agencies, in turn, say that warehouses with saltpeter were attacked, emphasizing separately that the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was not damaged, but the nearby market, hospital and residential buildings were.
“The information has already been unequivocally confirmed that a large humanitarian hub was located right a few meters from the missile hit, and a boy with a disability remained on duty there for the night. This is not some kind of heartbreaking story, it’s actually true. This boy died for sure. But the psychological effect that they want to achieve (in Kyiv) as a result of these bombings will not be achieved. This is a crime against the civilian population, first of all," Leontyev said, adding that he considers Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to be a criminal.
"When you give an order to bomb the center of a peaceful city, this is a crime, an obvious crime that has no statute of limitations. This is a real tragedy," Leontyev added.
