How Timex Will Make The Best Watches Under $200 in 2018 - Marlin Reissue Comparison & Review
The Urban Gentry

Published on Nov 28, 2017
Today I return to a brand I have come to admire profoundly over the last few years, thanks in part to my 60s era "Made in Great Britain" Marlin watch.

Any true horologist will know of Timex, their legendary history of innovation, and their rich American legacy. However, since the 80s, the brand has shied away from making mechanical movements and subsequently conquered the affordable entry level quartz watch market. Using smart advertising, clean designs, and dependable quality, they still offer one of the best alternatives to a price range filled with fashion watches and Japanese brand dominance.

Thankfully, things seem to be changing in favour of the watch enthusiast eager to see this legendary brand return to mechanical watchmaking greatness. Today I review the already greatly hyped 2017 Marlin reissue. I compare it to my 1960s original and talk about why I think Timex will dominate in the years to come by looking at their recent military inspired "Waterbury" watch.

Blaufrankisch, The Wine Market, and Swiss Watch Exports | LIQUOR RUN
Theo and Harris

Published on Dec 1, 2017

In this week's episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly dive into a bottle of Blaufrankisch from Markus Altenburger and discuss the impact of natural disasters on the world of wine, as well as the context of Swiss watch exports in 2017.

In the wine world, a series of natural disasters over the course of 2017 have posed some serious threats to the ability of some of the world's leaders in wine production to keep up with the levels they have been able to maintain in the past. In Rolly's opinion, price may go up to match this discrepancy, most noticeably in respect to wines where the production areas and vineyards have been significantly impacted.

In the watch world, we talked a few months ago about a decrease in Swiss watch exports from most of the major manufacturers, which didn't necessarily reflect a decrease in sales. Christian's theory, and one I tend to agree with, is that the boutiques may have been getting too much stock the entire time, and only finally decided to bite back and tell the manufacturers to slow down. Regardless, the brands have reported an up-tick in exports once again, leading to the question: is this to meet demand, or is this an artificial push to try and improve the state of the industry?

A Look at ERIC CLAPTON'S INSANE Watch Collection | Collection Review
Theo and Harris

Published on Nov 29, 2017

In this week's collection review, Christian takes a look at the collection of Mr. Eric Clapton, one of the most well-respected guitar players in music history, and a true icon. You may not automatically think of Patek (or watches in general) when you think of Eric Clapton, but the man has some incredible taste, and the funds to really execute what, for most of us, are pipe dream level pieces.

The first of those is his PLATINUM 2499. This reference is part of the second generation of Perpetual Calendar Chronographs made by Patek Philippe, and one of the rarest ever produced. It's estimated that only 10 were made per year of the entire reference, in all variations, totaling up to about 350 or so all in all. In platinum? Try only TWO ever made. And what does Clapton do with it? He sells it at Christie's for upwards of 3 and a half million dollars.

The second piece in his collection is an original Rolex Yachtmaster, but not the one you're thinking of. If you want to know which one we're talking about, you'll have to keep your eyes peeled in the video. The final piece is an albino Rolex Daytona 6263. What's an albino Daytona? It's hard to explain, so you're just going to have to take a look at the pictures in the video itself. Suffice it to say, it's isn't just a beautiful watch with an interesting character all its own, but a true rare bird.

***MALBEC & Matching Leathers | LIQUOR RUN***

In this week's episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly dive into a bottle of Malbec from LaPosta Paulucci while discussing the endless style conundrum: do you need to match the leathers of your watch strap, belt, and shoes?

Christian brings up a great point with respect to this conundrum (two, actually): who cares, and how impractical can you possibly get? On the style front, it's been said to death that the most important thing is to be content with the way you dress, and to be comfortable in it. Obviously, you need to dress in a way that you think looks good on you, and not just for comfort, but being able to look at yourself in the mirror and be totally satisfied with how you look is always top priority. Always.

On a practical level, if you're even remotely like us at T&H, straps don't just exist in your collection in tones of brown and black. Whether it's a navy blue T&H x JR Type II "Sark" strap, or a mustard yellow suede, having to worry about matching these more obscure tones with items of clothing where they would stand out far more than they will on your wrist is simply an illogical task. Could you do it? Absolutely, and more power to you. But for most of us, it just doesn't make a ton of sense to go out of our way to make sure we have a pair of shoes and a belt to go with every strap combination we may employ at any given time. Not to mention, some leathers look great on straps, but would be awful belts. Food for thought.

An Exclusive Behind The Scenes At Romain Gauthier - Independent In-House Haute Horlogerie Watchmaker
The Urban Gentry

Published on Dec 12, 2017
Today I am proud to share another episode from my adventures in Switzerland. Last time we looked at high end luxury watchmaking on a large scale from the legendary brand Jaeger-LeCoultre (link below, in case you missed it). In this video, we take an exclusive tour with one of the most highly regarded independent haute horology watchmakers, who has been making a name for himself ever since he arrived on the scene.

Romain Guathier is a Vallee de Joux native with an extensive background in precision machinery and engineering, culminating in an MBA in 2002. His final thesis was a business plan to start his own watch company, which he turned into an award winning reality in 2005. Since then, Romain has brought consistent innovation, completely original designs with regards to aesthetics, and his own amazing calibres, redefining what it really means to be Swiss made and in-house.

Romain's no-compromise approach to haute horlogerie can be seen in the extensive production techniques that push the very limits of precision, quality and luxury - a few of which we were so privileged to see and share with a tour from the man himself!

We then look at the finished product, starting with his first watch, the Prestige HMS with a unique flat winding crown system. We follow with a look at the award winning Logical One, with its fiendishly clever re-invented take on the classic Fusse and chain system, and finally my personal favorite (and his latest creation), the stunning automatic Insight Micro-Rotor.

**Talking Che Guevara's Rolex GMT & PVD Coated Watches | ASKTNH LIVE**

In this week's episode of ASKTNH LIVE, Christian tackles the hardest hitting questions of the week from the watchfam over on our Instagram (@theoandharris, wink wink).

The first question we tackle comes in the form of Che Guevara's PERSONAL Rolex GMT, a watch that seems, to those who know anything about the man himself, to be the antithesis of everything he stood for. When you think about it, though, back pretty much before the era of smartphones, it wasn't an easy thing to keep track of time in more than one time zone. Having access for that complication became vital for everyone from reporters to military generals, and just about everyone in between.

The other major topic in this week's episode comes in the form of Christian's thoughts on PVD coated watches. While PVD used to be a near death sentence for the case's ability to withstand scratching, it's become a lot more of a solid practice nowadays. So, while Christian has no problem with them, he certainly doesn't see himself owning one. Why is that? You're gonna have to watch to the end of the video to find out!

The Best Value German Automatic Dive Watch Under $1500 - The Stowa Seatime Black Review
The Urban Gentry

Published on Dec 19, 2017
Today we return to the legendary brand Stowa for a long overdue look at their Seatime automatic dive watch. Originally released in 1963, this recent reissue is often overlooked because the brand is better known for their classic fliegers and Bauhaus inspired watches. However, it turns out their dive watches are just as good as any genre they choose to focus on.

The Seatime offers amazing value for money, considering it has a history going back the early 60s, a clean functional design, is available for purchase through an innovative online boutique, and has a high quality the world has come to respect from Germany. While not perfect, this might possibly be the best German made automatic dive watch on the market today, at a $1000 to $1500 USD price point.

SoCo Egg Nog and Shameless Plugs | A LIQUOR RUN CHRISTMAS
Theo and Harris

Published on Dec 20, 2017

In this week's (slightly early) episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly discuss their recommendations for gifts from the watch shop at Theo & Harris. Before they get into the topic, though, we watch as Rolly completely forgets how to pour a liquid into a cup of any kind, resulting in arguably the funniest T&H moment of the year.

Rolly's suggestion is, go figure, a Rolex (the name pun being too obvious not to acknowledge, but too easy to make an actual joke about). Something Christian says about this comes in the idea that you can take a Rolex, run it into the ground, and still almost definitely get parts for it and have it looking good as new in no time. These aren't just watches; their heirlooms, and practically can be used as currency in most parts of the world.

For Christian's pick, we have any of the T&HxJR straps, which you've heard us talk about ad nauseum already. They're easily some of the best, if not THE best straps in their respective prices, plus some, and they make an excellent gift for the horologically minded individual in your life.

A Beautiful Collection of Rolex, JLC, & More | COLLECTION REVIEW
Theo and Harris

Published on Dec 22, 2017

In this week's collection review, Christian takes a look at the collection of a T&H fan named Giovanni. Giovanni has an interesting approach to his collection, specifically gravitating towards pieces that interest him both mechanically and aesthetically.

His first piece is, interestingly, the antithesis of this kind of specificity, being a piece left to him by his grandfather - an Omega Seamaster, which his grandfather received as a gift on the occasion of his retirement. His name is engraved on the back, which he happened to share with Giovanni, adding to the piece's already MASSIVE sentimental value.

Next, we get into two JLC Reversos (one, a Tribute to 1931; the other, a Grande Date). From there, we have a modern Rolex Submariner that, although simple, is still an incredible watch. In keeping with the Rolex theme, we have a Coke GMT from 1999 that serves as a surrogate for Giovanni's desire to own a so-called "Fat Lady" GMT Master. For Giovanni's next piece, he and Christian are in full agreement: the JLC Geophysic.

  • The 15 Presidents Day-Date Rolexes retail for a whopping $40,000 in stores
  • Wall had each engraved with the players' initials on the back of the watchface
  • He had been planning the extraordinary gesture with jewelers for a month

Wine & Watch World New Year's Resolutions (Over Pinot Noir) | LIQUOR RUN
Theo and Harris

Published on Dec 29, 2017
In this week's episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly dive into the things they'd like to see happen in both the wine world and the watch world in 2018!

*** Wine & Watch World New Year's Resolutions (Over Pinot Noir) | LIQUOR RUN ***

In this week's episode of LIQUOR RUN, Christian and Rolly discuss the things they'd like to see happen in both the wine and watch world in the upcoming new year over a fantastic bottle of Pinot Noir (a gift from T&H fan Eric (or Erik - sorry buddy)!.

In the world of wine, Rolly has a few things he'd like to see happen and areas of the industry he'd like to explore. The first is Spanish Sherry, which is almost like a spectrum of different wines that ranges from the super fruity to the almost salty, and nearly every major taste sensation in between. The next is Austrian wines, an area that he and Christian both feel they simply don't know enough about. Last, but certainly not least, he'd like to revisit Chilean wines, another area he's not satisfied with his exploration of.

In the world of watches, Christian really wants to hammer down on developing more of a community for watch enthusiasts online, really helping bring in people new to the hobby and giving them the kind of service and support they deserve. In other words, the T&H goal for 2018 is to continue growing the watchfam, which you can help with by sharing these videos and inviting people to the Facebook group (link below). Was that totally shameless? Not at all; probably one of the most shame-ridden plugs of the year.

This Abercrombie & Fitch Watch Will Improve Your Fishing
Vintage Watch Collector

Published on Dec 29, 2017
Abercrombie & Fitch once produced watches in conjuction with Heuer which were called Solunar and Seafarer. They were based upon John Alden Knight's Solunar theory in which he claimed that the moon affected animal's behaviour, and that using this knowledge will improve your chances at fishing or hunting.

24 Hours In London - A Guide On Essential Places To Visit - From Free & Affordable To Ultra Luxury
The Urban Gentry

Published on Jan 2, 2018
In today's video I start the new year off with a brief tour of the city of my birth. London is an overwhelmingly big city to the uninitiated and with an almost intimidating amount of things to see and visit, where do you start?

As I was traveling over the festive season to see family in the UK, I thought I might as well drop by the capital to see friends and share some of my favorite attractions. I have been enjoying many of these since childhood, but as London inevitably evolves with time (the measurement of which was pioneered at Greenwich!) there is a whole new addition of new things to experience and enjoy. No matter if you are on a budget or wish to splash out on some classy old world luxury, London has it all.

I start my day with something of a family tradition with a hearty brunch at the iconic Savoy Hotel. To help digest the meal, I take a walk to Somerset House, followed by a stop at the Southbank, which is one of Europe's largest centers for the arts. On the way I share some favorite horological treats and end up at the legendary Fortnum & Mason to stock up on essentials. I then continue shopping with a look at the luxury goods on offer at the world renowned Jermyn Street, which is known for its exclusive gentlemen's clothing. I then take a break to reflect inside one of the city’s many hidden gems of architecture. St. James Church on Piccadilly was designed by the acclaimed Christopher Wren, and at the time of this trip, the church had a very moving modern art installation on display.

After a quick stop at the always trendy Covent Garden, we pop back over the river to the amazing Tate Modern to take in a few art exhibits. We then decide to end the day with quite literally a high with dinner overlooking the city at the fashionable and luxurious Aqua Shard in the majestic Shard building. In conclusion, I also run through a list of essential attractions, options for perfect days out and trusted London favorites I highly recommend.

Every Rolex Owner Or Fan Must Own This! - Rolex: History, Icons and Record-Breaking Models
The Urban Gentry

Published on Jan 6, 2018
Today I take a look at a recent gift I received for Christmas on one of my favorite watch brands. I was so chuffed with it, I decided to quickly share it with the Gentry and discuss what I like about it most in this mini review.

Rolex: History, Icons and Record-Breaking Models is by Mara Cappelletti, who is a journalist and consultant for many publications by antiquarians and jewellery historians, she is also a professor of the history of jewellery at the Istituto Superiore di Arte Orafa Galdus. In book was made in collaboration with Osvaldo Patrizzi, a watch collector and world-class watch expert.

The history of Rolex is inextricably linked to its founder Hans Wilsdorf, who took the first steps in the world of Swiss watchmaking as he dreamed about a timepiece that could be worn around the wrist. This experimental research led Rolex to achieve its highest goals in both technological innovation and in the use of the finest materials alone. Its models have been photographed on the wrists of political leaders, sports champions, and film and fashion celebrities, transforming each rolex into a fully-fledged status symbol, a synonym of elegance and precision.

Including essays with a historical and technical slant, in-depth descriptions of the most representative pieces and a brief glossary, the pages in this book sparkle with golden hands, diamond-studded dials and patent leather watchbands, illustrated in period photographs and macro-detail. The volume ends with a chapter dedicated to the most amazing auctions that saw the sale of the Geneva-based company's vintage watches.

For the best deal on the book, check out Amazon:

Classic Military Watch Inspired Perfection & The Best Microbrand Automatic Diver - NTH Näcken Review
The Urban Gentry

Published on Jan 9, 2018
Today I review a watch I bought last year on a whim. After borrowing one from my good friend and industry legend John Kiel, I was instantly hooked. As I am sure a lot of my viewers know, I have owned countless Tudor, Omega and Rolex dive watches over the years, so when I was introduced to the NTH Näcken line, I instantly understood this was no ordinary homage, but a tribute to an entire era of classic military dive watches.

With a big crown of a 1954 Rolex Submariner, the dial of a Marine Nationale Tudor Submariner 9411 or 9014, and the case like the previously reviewed 60s Omega Seamaster 300 166.0324, it has been tastefully brought bang up to date with modern materials and a quality that secures its dominance as one of, if not the best micro brand, military inspired, automatic 300m dive watches. In addition, its modest price of just over $600 can’t be beat.

So, today I dive in (forgive the pun!) and take a look with a full review, including what I like and don't about this super fun watch that set the record on its release of being the thinest 300m microbrand diver.
