Words, word, words...
How about some new abbreviations? I read an article in which the author was dating a find in an ice core and referred to the date as 660 BCE.
WTF is BCE??

CE and BCE

Common Era (CE) and Before Common Era (BCE)

The letters CE or BCE in conjunction with a year mean after or before year 1. The Common Era begins with year 1 in the Gregorian calendar.

CE and BCE are used in exactly the same way as the traditional abbreviations AD and BC.
AD is short for Anno Domini, Latin for year of the Lord. BC is an abbreviation of Before Christ.

Because AD and BC hold religious (Christian) connotations, many prefer to use the more modern and neutral CE and BCE to indicate if a year is before or after year 1.

We seem to be moving further and further away from belief in Jesus Christ.
sad, sad, sad.

OK then, photography seems to be popular around these parts, betcha never knew this one:

Bokeh

In photography, bokeh (Japanese: boke) is the aesthetic quality of the blur produced in the out-of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Bokeh has been defined as "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light".

<Heh> I don't know if that statement qualifies as a dichotomy or not. Maybe Walter can weigh in on this.

Well... I cannot tell you why sometimes a house will burn down, while a nearby house can burn up.

malfeasance
n.Misconduct or wrongdoing, especially by a public official.
n.Evil-doing; the doing of that which ought not to be done; wrongful conduct, especially official misconduct; violation of a public trust or obligation; specifically, the doing of an act which is positively unlawful or wrongful, in contradistinction to misfeasance, or the doing of a lawful act in a wrongful manner. The term is often inappropriately used instead of misfeasance.
n.The doing of an act which a person ought not to do; evil conduct; an illegal deed.

For us mathematically challenged (like me)

Mean vs Average

Let's say we have a set of numbers:

11, 23, 30, 47, 56

The mean, sometimes called the arithmetic mean, of this set is 33. The mean is the sum of all the numbers in the set (167) divided by the amount of numbers in the set (5).

The median is the middle point of a number set, in which half the numbers are above the median and half are below. In our set above, the median is 30. But what if your number set has an even number of, er, numbers:

11, 23, 30, 47, 52, 56

To calculate the median here, add the two middle numbers (30 + 47) and divide by 2. The median for our new list is 38.5.

Too fargin complex.

Do it thisaway:

You gots one bare foot on the stove burner, and the other on a block of ice.

On the AVERAGE, you are comfortable.

And whoever put you there is MEAN.

And while we are on the subject of fans, take a lookit this:

Leptokurtic - A distribution that displays a positive value of excess kurtosis, or sharpness of the peak of the graph of the distribution. The graph of a leptokurtic probability distribution shows a much higher peak around the mean value, and "fat tails", or higher densities of values at the extreme ends of the probability curve.

August, September, October — HEY! it's time for a new "Word of the Day"

Try this one: shibboleth (Sounds a little kikey, eh? It's not though.)
A shibboleth is any custom or tradition, usually a choice of phrasing or even a single word, that distinguishes one group of people from another. Shibboleths have been used throughout history in many societies as passwords, simple ways of self-identification, signaling loyalty and affinity, maintaining traditional segregation, or protecting from real or perceived threats.
Since we've taken so long to come up with an impressive word for today I thought I'd take it a little further with an example.

Shibboleth.jpg
But now I see yet another problem here, just how the hell do you pronounce Tchoupitoulas and just what is it?

No visit to New Orleans is complete without walking through Tchoupitoulas Street. The street got its name from a now extinct Native American tribe côte des Chapitoulas meaning those who live by the river. As a matter of fact, Tchoupitoulas Street is the through street closest to the Mississippi River. But the real question is, how do you say it? To pronounce Tchoupitoulas, we can break it down as CHOP-ah-too-lus.

See, easy peasy

Awright. Now ya gone and fargin done it.

Ya stepped on yer Unca's Useless Trivia fart pillow. :bombs 9:

Way back when I was young, there was a gawd-awful battle in the Middle East. Real ass-kicker-gonna-get-you-sucka fight. Between... lessee... the Gileadites and the Ephraimites. The Gillies kicked the Eph's Effin' Asses. Yella bastages tried to cut and run, but the Gillies cut them off at the pass (TINS <-- to my knowledge, that is the first recorded time this was used).

They let folks out of the valley one at a fargin time. To get out alive, each one had to say the Hebrew word for a kernel of grain: Shibboleth.

Just like native Chinese can only pronounce my name as "Wort" or Bill's name as "Beer" -- and just like nobody here can say the Mandarin word "sz" correctly, there are some sounds that actually define your nationality, background, or ethnicity.

And them there pore bastages in the Valley Of Killemall never had a chance to pass as civilians or Gillies -- because they just could not say that fargin word, "Shibboleth".

No get it right? You say, "Thibbolesh" ? Whoopsie. He ded.

Does it go like this?

You walk up to her and say, "Do you know the difference between erotic and kinky?

She giggles (hopefully) and says, ahh, no.

You say: Erotic is when you tickle your lover with a feather, and kinky is when you use the whole chicken...

Old very fowl joke.

The pronunciation sounds more like the armed guys in dark uniforms, that go around shooting some innocent citizens. :oriental::bomb 1::bomb 1::bomb 1:

eighty-sixed

Traditionally, to be eighty-sixed is to be cut off from further booze service. This term comes all the way from the wild west, where a bartender would only serve the 86 proof whiskey to customers already too drunk (86 proof was reserved for the ladies).

Today it means to be cut-off at the bar, kicked out of the bar, or to be cut-off or barred from something in general.
